Every year shipments are returned, destroyed or seized because they contain items the carrier or the destination country does not accept. Knowing the rules before you pack saves money and stress.
Items that are generally prohibited
- Narcotics and controlled substances
- Weapons, ammunition, replicas and parts
- Explosives, fireworks and flammable materials
- Currency, bearer instruments and precious metals in bulk
- Counterfeit and pirated goods
- Pornographic or offensive material
- Live animals and human remains (without special arrangements)
Restricted items that need approval
These items may be accepted only on certain routes, in limited quantities or with documents:
- Lithium batteries and electronics containing them
- Perfumes and aerosols, which are classed as dangerous goods for air transport
- Medicines, which usually require a prescription and are limited by quantity
- Food items, especially meat, dairy, seeds and fresh produce
- Cosmetics and liquids that may leak
- Jewellery and high-value items that may need insurance and special handling
Destination rules matter too
Countries such as Australia, New Zealand and the United States have strict biosecurity rules on food, plants and wooden items. Gulf countries restrict certain medicines and publications. Always check the destination before booking.
Declare honestly
Describe every item clearly and accurately. Hiding restricted items inside other goods is illegal and may lead to penalties for the shipper.
