An international parcel can pass through several sorting centres, conveyor belts, trucks and aircraft before it is delivered. Good packing protects the contents and helps the shipment move without delay.
Choose the right box
Use a new or good-condition corrugated carton strong enough for the weight. Double-wall boxes are best for anything above 10 kg. Avoid shopping bags, sacks or boxes with holes or soft corners.
Cushion every item
- Leave about 5 cm of cushioning between the items and every side of the box.
- Wrap fragile items individually in bubble wrap.
- Fill empty spaces with paper or air pillows so nothing shifts when you shake the box.
- Place heavy items at the bottom and lighter items on top.
Protect against liquids and moisture
Seal permitted liquids in leak-proof containers inside sealed plastic bags. Line the box with plastic if it may be exposed to rain during collection.
Seal with the H method
Use 48 mm pressure-sensitive packing tape across the centre seam and along both edges on the top and bottom, forming an "H". Do not use string, masking tape or paper tape.
Label clearly
- Remove or cover old labels and barcodes.
- Attach the shipping label and the package copy of the challan to the largest side.
- Put a second copy of the address inside the box in case the outer label is damaged.
Special items
Electronics should travel in their original packaging when possible. Artwork, glass and ceramics may need a wooden crate. Ask us before sending anything unusual or high value.
Well-packed parcels arrive safely and are easier to claim for if something does go wrong. See our claims guidance for details.
